NAME  Jordan Jarvis Hughes

OCCUPATION  I am a library assistant at Samford University's library during the day and do calligraphy and hand lettering work on nights and weekends.

WHERE'S HOME  Birmingham, Alabama

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH HAND LETTERING and CALLIGRAPHY  I have loved handwriting since the day I was introduced to it. I remember sitting at our den table as a determined little girl, crayon in hand, as my older brother watched carefully over my shoulder, pointing out every time my "r"s faced the wrong direction. I perfected the art of "sign making" with markers for my friends as a middle schooler and moved on to Homecoming banners as a high schooler. In college, I addressed my own wedding invitations, as well as several friends' post graduation. It seems like no matter what phase of life I have been in, I have always found a creative outlet in hand lettering and doodling, whether I was practicing my cursive letters over and over or filling my college notes with embellished script and drawings. Needless to say, it was only a matter of time before I took my first official calligraphy class and finally opened up shop!

WHAT'S TOP ON YOUR BUCKET LIST  Probably to visit England again with my husband, Gabriel. We are total history, literature, and theology fanatics, so England was about the dreamiest place we've ever been!  (Are you even allowed to re-add something you already crossed off your bucket list, simply because you loved it so much?!)

HOW DO YOU SUPPORT LOCAL  Birmingham is going through quite the renaissance and revitalization right now, and local love has definitely been an emphasis! We have new shops, local restaurants, breweries, and local events to benefit the city popping up all over the place! I have been able to support my city by teaming up with other local artists to have my prints and products made, as well as frequenting new, home-grown restaurants and businesses. My favorite meal right now is the pork and greens at Saw's Soul Kitchen, which is a plate of cheese grits, piled with collard greens and pulled pork, topped with pieces of onion rings and BBQ sauce. It's a Southerner's dream come true! (And probably a heart attack waiting to happen ;) )

ANYTHING ELSE  In addition to custom calligraphy orders and envelope addressing, I also started an online stationery shop called Stately Made, where I make cards and prints from my original hand lettering that celebrate state and regional culture.
